Mini printers for business, thermal printers for invoices, receipt labels, and more.
Mini printers are small, portable devices that enable the quick printing of documents, labels, or notes without the need for large, stationary equipment. Such printers can often easily fit in a backpack or even a pocket. Many models also have a built-in battery. The most common are models that use thermal printing technology. They do not require ink or toner and need only special thermal paper to operate. One of their major advantages is their price, which starts at just a few dozen zlotys. However, the market also offers mini printers that use ink and, despite their compact size, allow for color printing on various types of paper.
The most common use of mini printers is, of course, printing receipts. In such cases, the printer must be part of a fiscal cash register. Receipts cannot simply be printed using any device; it is essential that information about the printed receipt is recorded in the system. Fiscal cash registers, receipt printers, and terminals are a separate topic. However, the mechanism of a miniature printer itself is useful for many other tasks, such as printing labels, notes, or order lists. Such printers can be treated as a useful gadget, but their capabilities increase when they are connected to a data management system. Many IT solutions, various CRM and ERP systems, or task management systems are problematic to implement because field workers simply need sheets of paper. Using a laptop or even a smartphone is not convenient in every situation; it is often useful for information to be attached to a specific item, and quite frequently, handing someone a piece of paper is more convenient than sending a message.

Applications of Mini Printers
Mini printers have a wide range of business applications. They are ideal for printing invoices, receipts, QR codes for shipping packages, labels, or notes. In the retail and warehouse sectors, they facilitate mobile operations, such as printing a receipt at the customer’s location. In logistics, they are used to label packages, while in everyday life they can print shopping lists or tickets. Mobile fiscal cash registers with an integrated printer are particularly useful for couriers, street vendors, or small businesses issuing invoices on the spot.
In the food service industry, mini printers are very useful for recording customer orders. This way, the kitchen immediately has information about what needs to be prepared, and there is no need to write notes by hand during the conversation with the customer, as everything is copied from the receipt.
Some students use such printers while studying. Thermal printers are also used to print tattoo designs.
Types of Mobile Printers (Brief)
The application of mini printers depends on their type. Three parameters are important: paper size, paper type, and printing method, all of which affect their capabilities and costs.
There are therefore thermal printers based on mini rolls (the print width is usually 57 mm, although other sizes are also available, ranging from 28 mm to 110 mm). There are also thermal printers that use A4 paper. Their advantage is that they do not require ink; however, given the higher cost of the paper, using them is ultimately more expensive than using traditional solutions.
There are also compact portable printers that use regular paper and allow for color printing, as well as mini printers designed specifically for printing photos, often paired with a camera. Some of them use inkless technology: dye-sublimation (4PASS) or ZINK (ink-free). This technology is more expensive than that used in standard thermal printers, but it enables higher-quality, color photo printing.
It is also worth mentioning dedicated label printers, i.e. devices equipped with their own keyboard. They are most often used for printing very narrow text.
Thermal printers are ideal where mobility and relatively low operating costs matter, while inkjet and thermal-transfer models are suitable for more diverse applications, such as printing photos or color labels. Regardless of the technology, mini printers are easy to use, economical, and enable convenient work in the field, during client meetings, or while traveling.
Important note: portable laser printers do not exist. A laser printer has to be large. The smallest laser printers weigh at least a few kilograms, so there is no version with its own battery, because it would not make sense. It is possible that someone has created an experimental version, but such things cannot be found easily.
Thermal printing, known from receipts, also has a significant drawback: this type of paper turns black when exposed to heat. Thus, the text on receipts placed behind a car’s windshield may disappear during hot weather. Thermal transfer and dye-sublimation printing are different. Such prints are much more durable, although they are also more expensive.
Specific Mobile Printers:
Toy printers (costing PLN 30–90), “no-name”
The cheapest mobile printers cost around several dozen zlotys and can connect to a phone via Bluetooth. They are sometimes available in regular supermarkets. Despite their toy-like casing, the printing mechanism is quite good; no one produces a separate toy printing mechanism. These toys are presented as photo printers, although the quality of those photos is obviously poor. The main use of such devices is primarily printing text.
If we are looking for a low price, it is worth spending some time searching for good deals. The price difference for the same model is often several dozen zlotys. The cheapest thermal printer I found on Allegro costs PLN 31.45.
The main limitation of toy printers is their software. They are most often operated through a smartphone app that has no API. So, when we operate them manually, no problems are apparent. However, when attempting to connect them to a system that would print automatically, the whole process starts to become complicated.
Another interesting model is a printer with a built-in camera. Of course, whether the camera actually has 48 megapixels is highly questionable, although any camera at this price is already interesting. While the photo quality is not the best, such photos are still useful as keepsakes. The quality of these “toys” is well demonstrated by a video in which five different versions of mini printers were tested.
The low price of this device shows that in the future it will be possible to create a relatively inexpensive, dedicated note-taking tool. It could feature integration with note-taking applications, a keyboard or the ability to connect a mini keyboard, as well as a working dictaphone with a text transcription function.
Professional Mini Printers
The main advantage of professional printers is that they are designed to work with external systems. Although the print quality does not differ significantly from that of toy versions, the higher price makes it easier to automate printing, for example, messages from other types of software such as CRM systems.

Mini photo printers
The cost of paper makes this a relatively expensive pastime. You’ll pay as much as PLN 80 for a pack of 20, so every click of “print” needs to be carefully considered. The photos themselves are pocket-sized (5.4 × 8.6 cm), but the actual image takes up even less space (4.6 × 6.2 cm), leaving a substantial border.
So it ends up being quite expensive, and with these dimensions, every sheet is practically worth its weight in gold. This is equipment more suited to creating impressive keepsakes “on the spot” than to mass-printing documents, because at this price, your wallet would quickly feel the difference.

Printing on any surface.
An industrial handheld printer (Handheld Inkjet Printer) that prints on almost anything instead of paper: from metal to cardboard.
This is a “gun”-type device used for marking goods (e.g., expiration dates, QR codes, or batch numbers). Instead of elegant photos, it produces a raw, technical print with a resolution of 600 dpi and a height of up to 12.7 mm. It is equipment designed for use in warehouses or production facilities.
The price range is quite broad:
- Simpler, used models that produce thin prints cost around 344 PLN.
- Industrial versions (more durable, waterproof) cost approximately 1,136 PLN.
It’s a typical “workhorse” — it has a touchscreen for quick text editing and a durable battery so you can carry it around the production floor for the entire shift.
Experimental, self-driving printer by ZUta. It is not available for regular sale.
Mini Mobile Robotic, an unusual gadget that, instead of feeding in sheets of paper, “drives” across the paper itself, leaving a print behind. The device is roughly the size of a Rubik’s Cube, making it one of the most compact printers ever invented.
The project did indeed launch on Kickstarter and generated considerable excitement as an innovation for digital nomads. Ultimately, however, the device remained more of a technological curiosity; it is currently unavailable for regular sale and is considered an experimental model that failed to break into the mass market.
Scribit
Scribit (a wall-mounted mini plotter that moves across a vertical surface)
Scribit is a small drawing robot that you hang on a wall (usually using two mounting points), after which it moves across the vertical surface on cables and draws text or graphics with markers. It was funded on Kickstarter; the campaign description explicitly states that it draws on “any vertical surface.”
An alternative if you’re comfortable with “do it yourself” (V-plotter, Polargraph)
These are constructions based on a similar idea: two motors at the top, cables, and a “gondola” holding a pen; the whole thing works like a hanging wall plotter. There are plenty of plans, instructions, and code available, but it usually requires assembly and calibration.

Mobile Printers: An Expansion on Technical Aspects
Thermal printers
These are the most common mini printers, operating by heating special thermal paper. They are usually black and white (monochrome), which limits them to text, labels, or receipts. Paper size: most commonly rolls 58 mm or 80 mm wide, but also small formats such as 76 × 50 mm. Examples include models such as the HDWR OPrint and AIMO M08F, with a resolution of 203 dpi and support for widths of up to 210 mm. Advantages: no ink required, fast printing (up to 6 pages/min), ideal for invoices in the field. Disadvantages: prints fade over time; no color.
Inkjet Printers
These models use ink, enabling color printing, including high-quality photos and documents. They are compact and portable, often featuring Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. Paper size: from small pocket formats (e.g., 10×15 cm) to A4 in larger models. Resolution can reach 4800×1200 dpi, ensuring good quality. Examples include the Epson L3270 (a multifunctional color printer with CISS) and the HP Smart Tank 581. They are suitable for everyday use but require ink replacement, which increases costs.
Laser Printers
Less commonly found in a mini version, but available as portable document models. They print in black and white or color, at high speed and with durable prints. Paper size: typically A4 (279.4 × 203.2 mm), with a resolution of 203 × 200 dpi.
Mini photo printers (photographic)
Specialized mini printers designed for printing small photos, often using thermal sublimation (4PASS) or ZINK technology (ink-free). They enable high-quality color printing at resolutions of 300 dpi (dots per inch) and above. Paper sizes: small formats such as 2×3 inches (approx. 5×7.6 cm), 4×6 inches (10×15 cm), or square formats (e.g., Kodak Mini 3 Plus Retro). Examples include Canon Selphy (dye-sublimation, up to 53 sec./photo), HP Sprocket, Canon Pixma TS3350 (inkjet with Wi-Fi), and Fujifilm Instax (instant). They are ideal for quickly printing selfies or memories from your phone, with good color durability.
Stamp-type printers (handheld)
Handheld printers are innovative devices that turn traditional printing concepts upside down. Instead of moving a sheet of paper through a mechanism, the user moves the device directly across the chosen surface. This solution eliminates limitations related to paper size, allowing content to be applied to objects with irregular shapes, from large cardboard boxes to small details.
In practice, these devices fall into two main categories. The first is the industrial sector, where robust “gun-style” printers are indispensable in warehouses and on production lines for marking products with expiration dates, QR codes, or batch numbers. The second category comprises smaller, pocket-sized gadgets used to personalize gifts and clothing or create creative invitations directly on fabric or wood.
The most important technical aspects of these devices are:
- Material versatility: The use of fast-drying solvent inks enables durable printing on metal, plastic, glass, concrete, and even leather.
- Precision and specifications: Standard printheads offer resolutions of up to 600 dpi, allowing prints ranging in height from 1 mm to typically 12.7 mm.
- Standalone operation: Most models feature built-in touchscreens for editing text or connect to smartphone apps, eliminating the need to connect a computer.
Although the prices of the devices themselves start at several hundred zlotys, it is worth remembering that specialized ink cartridges account for the main operating costs.
Consumer vs. industrial models:
- Industrial (e.g. EBS and Meenjet brands): They cost from several hundred to several thousand zlotys. They are durable and designed to operate in demanding warehouse conditions.
- Creative (e.g. PrintPen and Colop e-mark): These are smaller gadgets for personalizing gifts and clothing or creating invitations, often controlled via a smartphone app.
Experimental Printers
Experimental printers are a category of devices that break with the conventional office format in favor of mobility and unconventional applications. The most spectacular are mini wall plotters (so-called wall printers), which are mounted on vertical surfaces. They use a system of cables and stepper motors to move the print head precisely across the wall, transforming it into a canvas for large-format graphics or murals.
How Do Mini Thermal Printers Work?
Let’s start with thermal printers, as they are the most compact. Thermal printing technology is based on special heat-sensitive paper. The print head heats selected points on the paper, causing them to darken and creating text or graphics. No ink is required, which makes these printers environmentally friendly and economical. A typical resolution is 203 dpi, and printing speeds can reach up to 120 mm/s, as in the HDWR OPrint-MA300B model. These printers usually connect via USB, Bluetooth, or Wi-Fi, enabling them to work with smartphones, tablets, or computers.
Advantages of Mini Thermal Printers
One of their greatest advantages is their compact size – they fit perfectly in a bag or pocket, making fieldwork easier. The fact that they do not require ink replacement reduces operating costs, while their ease of use (simply load a roll of paper) makes them accessible to everyone. Additionally, these printers offer fast printing within seconds, which is crucial in retail and logistics. They are also environmentally friendly, generating less waste.
Example models on the market
Numerous models are available on the Polish market, priced from approximately PLN 100 to PLN 500. Here are some popular ones:

- NIIMBOT B21: With USB, available in various colors. Price from PLN 214. Supports invoice and barcode printing.
- ZENWIRE TD-401: With Bluetooth/Wi-Fi, priced at PLN 349.99. High print quality for professional use.
- NETUM Bluetooth 80 mm: Portable printer for invoices, compatible with POS systems. Price approx. PLN 200–300 on platforms such as Amazon.
Prices vary depending on the features, but free delivery is standard on many platforms.
Potential drawbacks of thermal printers
Despite their many advantages, thermal printers have limitations. Prints on thermal paper may fade when exposed to heat, light, or the passage of time (typically lasting 6–12 months). They are not suitable for color printing, and the dependence on special paper increases long-term costs. Additionally, in battery-powered models, operating time on a single charge may be limited to a few hours.
Printing cost: The cost of thermal printing in A4 format is usually higher than that of laser or inkjet printing, mainly due to the price of the special thermal paper required for this technology (with no ink or toner). Below, I compare the costs per A4 page (mono, black-and-white printing, assuming compatible consumables for ink and toner), based on current prices in Poland (data from 2025/2026). Prices vary depending on the brand, the number of pages printed, and the store, but I provide approximate averages. I include only the cost of materials (paper + ink/toner), excluding printer depreciation and energy.
Cost per A4 page
- Thermal printing: No ink/toner costs – the only expense is thermal paper. The average price of a ream (100–200 sheets) is PLN 35–50, which comes to PLN 0.30–0.50/page. For larger packages (e.g. from Allegro or Amazon), this may fall to PLN 0.25/page, but thermal paper is approximately 10–20 times more expensive than regular paper (standard A4: PLN 0.02–0.04/page for a 500-sheet ream). Prints fade over time, which may generate additional reprinting costs.
- Laser printing: The cost of toner (compatible) per monochrome page is approximately PLN 0.03–0.05 (toner yield: 2,000–5,000 pages per cartridge costing approximately PLN 50–100). Plus regular paper: PLN 0.02. Total: PLN 0.05–0.07/page. For color: PLN 0.15–0.30/page. Laser printing is the cheapest for large print runs because toner is highly efficient.
- Inkjet printing: The cost of ink (compatible) per monochrome page is approximately PLN 0.05–0.10 (cartridge yield of 500–1,000 pages, price PLN 20–50). Plus regular paper: PLN 0.02. Total: PLN 0.07–0.12/page. For color: PLN 0.20–0.50/page. Inkjet printers are cheaper for small print runs, but ink dries out, increasing costs with infrequent use.
Technology | Cost per monochrome page (PLN) | Main cost factor | Cost advantages | Cost disadvantages |
Thermal | 0.30–0.50 | Thermal paper | No ink | Expensive paper, fading |
Laser | 0.05–0.07 | Toner + paper | Efficient for large print runs | More expensive original toner |
Inkjet | 0.07–0.12 | Ink + paper | Inexpensive for small print runs | Inks dry, more expensive color |
Mini thermal printers for invoices are a practical tool for anyone who values mobility and cost savings. Whether in a small business or for everyday use, they offer fast and reliable printing without unnecessary complications. Before purchasing, it is worth checking compatibility with your devices and your requirements regarding print size.
